Pascoe’s Passion, Waste to Wonder
In a world with so much stuff, Rosie Pascoe was looking for a way to fulfill her creative drive – without adding to the excesses of our world. Fifteen years ago, she found her way by using waste and excess stuff to create new objects. With 90% of what she produces coming from recycled materials, she is pushing the limits of the modern mantra, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Hidden behind Leura high street, today finds Pascoe in a new studio-gallery space, Through The Roller Door. Here she waves her skillful hands over “junk”, transforming it into one-off garments and jewelry. Also on display is some of her evocative photographic work, reminiscent of the film noir genre.
Pascoe is inspired to demonstrate how resourceful you can be with waste. Pointing out a bustier entirely created from products headed to landfill, it now stands proud, gifted with a second chance at life.“Its good to see people getting inspired and seeing what they can do with nothing”. Her style is bold and unique, it is this that draws people to her work. Pascoe also offers tailor made pieces, for those looking for a collaborative creation that fits to perfection. The dying art of bespoke tailoring is a quality she has found fascinates her customers.
As a craftsperson and artist, Pascoe describes her work as usually containing a political or social commentary. In truth, the very essence of her work is a social statement. Having grown up in the Blue Mountains and with the bush as her first love, she’s keenly aware of the Big Smoke’s slow but steady push towards her home town. Being able to observe changes in the timing and intensity of the seasons, over the course her own life, and in her own back yard, has made her a firm believer in the effect we are having on our planet. It’s no wonder Rosie Pascoe is so passionate about the environmental impact of her creative life.
Her number one priority is now to enjoy herself and her work. With her new space an amalgamation of her passions, she just hopes to share it with others. Looking for creative people to collaborate with, she plans to build a community of artist in the mountains.
